Linear guideway is a mechanical device which performs linear or sliding movement in horizontal or vertical position, which puts it among positioning systems. It is used in many applications which require linear re-adjustment of shifted load from one position to another. Linear drives are thus used in machine tools and equipment, valves, dampers, etc. They replace hydraulic or pneumatic pistons which inherently generate linear motion. A number of different mechanisms are used to convert the rotational movement of classical linear motor.

The basis of linear guideway is a structural aluminium system that allows for easy connection to existing installations, or easy extension of the way with different extensions or electronic components. In combination with a suitable actuator one and multi-axis linear systems can be made.
